This newly built, 5,200 sqft custom home in California, United States, perfectly blends a modern and clean look with large windows, to bring the outside foliage in. The home was designed and built with the homeowners’ lifestyle in mind; it provides them, an open, earthy yet modern space to entertain and showcase their collections accumulated during their world travels. The design of this home is the perfect combination of a functional space with high ceilings to display the homeowner’s traditional art pieces, and an organic space formed around the property’s historic trees.

To achieve proper illumination of the art collections, the lighting designer Deborah Gottesman, chose to use Liteline’s Sigma 2 wall wash fixtures to highlight the walls and allows for reflected light to subtlety illuminate the spaces. This provided natural and unique lighting that created a softer glow throughout the home. In addition to the Sigma 2 wall wash fixtures, the Sigma 2 deep regressed fixture was also used for general illumination throughout the space to keep a consistent style with ample lighting from the high ceilings, and nearly no glare with the regressed optics.

In areas like the kitchen, there was an opportunity to layer the lighting allowing the homeowners to create different moods within one space. Liteline’s Sigma 2 wall wash and deep regress fixtures were used for wall washing the cabinetry and provide counter-top task lighting. Having bright white cabinets allow for the light to reflect off this surface providing an even illumination throughout the space. LEDbar was used for indirect lighting above the cabinets to accentuate the high ceilings, enticing the eyes to move up rather than down. LEDbar was also installed under the cabinets to provide task lighting to the counter space, and inside of an island niche to accent the homeowners’ collectables. All these different layers are on individual controls in order to allow for setting different scenes with different moods, providing flexibility and countless possibilities of lighting options within the spaces.

In other areas of the home such as washrooms, Liteline’s Powertape has been used to highlight serval areas around the mirror and under vanities to create the illusion of floating off the wall and floors respectively. The Sigma 2 deep regress was also used within the shower as it is WET Location rated and matches the lighting throughout the entire home.

Overall, the lighting within the home is seamless; one notices the art, collections and features of the space rather than the luminaires themselves.

The construction of this home was not without some hiccups, primarily due to construction during the height of the pandemic. There was large supply chain issue that all of construction was seeing, plus it became more difficult with the reduced product offering that meets Title 24 requirements, which is necessary for California. During this time Liteline was able to meet of all the requests with easily searchable Title 24 products and multiple warehouses with stocked product. Liteline prides itself on providing innovative product, quality service, with readily available inventory, and enormous support from all ends.

“Liteline’s products offer a high-performance luminaires for very reasonable prices. Plus, their team was helpful and knowledgeable on the product and inventory levels”

– Deborah Gottesman

This home was designed to have ample windows and skylights to enable the abundance of natural daylight that is filtered by historic oak trees that rest on the property. The large windows throughout the home allow for the interior space to flow harmoniously with the outdoors and brings a connection to nature indoors. The lighting was meant to enhance this natural feeling by having the soft reflection of lighting illuminate the room rather than making the lights the focal point of every room.
